Socio-economic Affairs
- Vietnam to resume several commercial flights (Ha Noi Moi, p7; Nhan Dan, Quan Doi Nhan Dan, p8). Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang tells a regular press conference that the Prime Minister and the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control have decided to resume flights between Vietnam and six low-risk countries and territories – Japan, the Republic of Korea (RoK), China, Taiwan (China), Laos, and Cambodia.
- Additional 280 Vietnamese citizens flown home from Europe (Quan Doi Nhan Dan, p8).
- Ho Chi Minh City races to reach economic growth goals (Ha Noi Moi, p6). After months suffering blows from COVID-19, Ho Chi Minh City’s economy gradually revived in the third quarter of 2020. For the rest of the year, the southern hub is racing to achieve 5-percent GDP growth this year with various measures.
- Government issues decree 109/2020/ND-CP allowing deferral of special consumption tax on locally-assembled cars (Lao Dong, p8).
- First batches of Vietnamese fruits shipped to EU under EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (Sai Gon Giai Phong, p4). The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the People’s Committee of Ben Tre province on September 17 jointly announced first shipments of fresh fruits, including a container of fresh coconut (by sea) and three tonnes of dragon fruit and pomelo (by air), to the EU under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
- Mekong Delta lures FDI flows into advantageous sectors (Cong Thuong [Industry & Trade], No. 113, p4). A new wave of investment from foreign countries to Vietnam is providing the Mekong Delta with an opportunity to attract FDI in a number of advantageous sectors, such as agriculture, processing and renewable energy. Data shows that a total of 119 FDI projects, worth 4.5 billion USD, landed in cities and provinces in the region during the first eight months of this year. The region is now home to more than 1,780 valid projects.
