Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Do Ba Ty has called on Vietnam and China to look at disputes at sea from the angle of a long-term strategic vision and international sea-related law.

The two sides should adhere to the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC), soon complete a Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC), and fully respect legitimate interests of concerned parties.

Ty, who is also President of the Vietnam-China Friendship Parliamentarians’ Group, made the remarks while meeting with Chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee Zhang Dejiang on December 19.

He is paying an official visit to China from December 18-22 as a step to carry out cooperation agreements between the legislative bodies of the two countries.

National Assembly Vice Chairman Do Ba Ty highlighted positive developments of the Vietnam-China relations over the past time as evidenced through regular visits and meetings between high-ranking leaders of the two countries.

He particularly mentioned the visits to China by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong and President Tran Dai Quang as well as the State-level visit to Vietnam to attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting 2017 in Da Nang in November by Party General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping.

He congratulated China on the successful organisation of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and described this as an extremely important political event of China.

For his part, Zhang Dejiang emphasised that China treasures the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership with Vietnam, and urged the two sides to make greater efforts to realise the comprehensive cooperation between the Communist Party of China and the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and the two countries.

Regarding disputes at sea, Zhang Dejiang said Vietnam and China should control disputes and solve problems through friendly talks and mutually beneficiary cooperation.

Law making bodies of the two countries should implement common perceptions reached by their leaders over the past time and intensify cooperation mechanisms, he recommended.

It is necessary for Vietnam and China to join hands to implement cooperation agreements between the two legislatures, and increase high-ranking delegation exchanges and experience sharing in law and Party building, he said.

He underlined the significance of communication work to raise trust of people of the two countries, considering this a foundation for a stronger relationship.

Zhang Dejiang took the occasion to repeat an invitation from General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and President Xi Jinping to Chairwoman of the National Assembly of Vietnam Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan to pay an official visit to China in 2018.

Later the same day, the Vietnamese legislator held talks with Xiang Ba Ping Cuo, Vice Chairman of Standing Committee of the China's National People's Congress (NPC), and met with Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Wang Jiarui.

During the meetings, the two sides affirmed that both Vietnam and China attach great importance to enhancing the bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

National Assembly Vice Chairman Do Ba Ty reiterated Vietnam’s external policies of diversification and multilateralisation of relations. The country particularly pays attention to developing a stable, healthy and sustainable relationship with China, and considers this as a strategic choice and a top priority in external policies.

Vietnam supports China to develop stronger in the future and promote its active role and make more significant contributions to peace and prosperity in the region and around the world, he added.-VNA
